The Suicide Denial – Interview w Chad Gerber

Interview by Carter Theis

The Suicide Denial is a band we don’t know an excessive amount of about. However our paths and connections crossed a couple of occasions, and we determined to see what’s up with these guys. Their music is dope and their movies are artistic. So right here’s 7 questions with singer/guitarist Chad Gerber.

Enoch Journal : Your identify is Suicide Denial, you write songs entitled “I’m OK” “Money” “Your Hell” and “Medicate.” I’m not seeing a variety of “Baby I miss you Sort songs. So what’s happening with you as a band and also you guys as artists?

The Suicide Denial – Chad Gerber : haha, I feel “baby I miss you songs” completely have their place, but as a band we’re aiming to type of dig a bit of deeper into problems I feel most people are carrying and are perhaps totally oblivious to. So many songs out there are about feeling good and never being accountable to the pain we all are carrying which is often positioned on us by others. Then those who acknowledge it will probably’t seem to seek out anyone else they will relate to as a result of everybody is just too busy making an attempt to bury it. This album airs some private dirty laundry, and as a band we would like fans to know that it’s okay to face down issues, even should you can’t beat them first go. The point is to attempt, and to suck it up and own up to injury brought on by others that pulls us down, and vice versa. There’s power to be gained in tackling the darker issues in life, I feel.

Enoch Journal : We by no means ask a band how they obtained their identify….until the phrase “Suicide” is of their identify. So “How did you get your name,” and is it meant to do greater than be a reputation…because “Suicide Denial” can also be a press release, right?

The Suicide Denial – Chad Gerber : I used to have a completely totally different, smooth squishy reply for this query, but prior to now couple years I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know some superb individuals from a charity referred to as To Write Love On Her Arms and I started to comprehend simply how dangerous suicide is getting out there. Some time ago the actor Owen Wilson attempted suicide and failed. Once I saw that I assumed “I can really relate to that”. My life was awful at the time. Then I began occupied with how he was principally denied his suicide, and how some individuals are suicidal each day of their lives, however by no means go forward with it. Many individuals are committing acts of Suicide Denial. The reality Owen Wilson was denied his suicide, and that many individuals deny themselves suicide is a tremendous, great point. So technically this band is the results of The Suicide Denial…….. does this make any sense? I feel like I’m writing a riddle. I should have gone with the smooth squishy reply as an alternative of the e-book rationalization.

Enoch Journal : Before beginning Suicide Denial, it says you worked with Aloe Blacc and members of Weapons and Roses. I’m an enormous Aloe fan and Nate is a hug Guns fan. Inform us each one thing about these artists from behind the scenes.

The Suicide Denial – Chad Gerber : Yes, Aloe Blacc, I owe him. I met him my very first day of shifting to Los Angeles years in the past and he gave me a business card. A type of “I make beats” sort enterprise playing cards or something haha. We began engaged on my previous music in his studio, and I might play guitar on a few of his tasks, hit up one another’s exhibits, that entire factor. He hooked me up, I don’t even assume The Suicide Denial would exist if it weren’t for him truly. When stuff started actually taking off for him this past yr with the “I Need A Dollar” music I was thrilled. One of the hardest working, most genuine individuals I do know. It’s also cool to see how a lot his type has changed since our early days in his house studio. He’s totally killin it now…. much more. Weapons and Roses dudes are completely totally different haha. I worked with Teddy Zig Zag who can also be an extremely cool man that did keys in GNR…..and in addition occurred to be in Jesse and the Rippers on Full home! haha. We worked with this actually imply producer who was also wrapped up in that entire Guns and Roses circus back in the course of the Appetite for Destruction days and he had a studio in Burbank, CA the place we labored on some stuff. The producer was so fried out of his mind from all these years of partying that I not often had any concept of what he was even talking about. More tour tales than I can even keep in mind, and most of them have been the identical story time and again haha. I did take pleasure in Teddy though, tremendous cool dude.

Enoch Journal : You’re just 2 guys? Guitar and Drums. I know that the 2-person band is rising in popularity. How is it easier and how is it harder?

The Suicide Denial – Chad Gerber : It’s horrible. We’re hoping to beef the band up to a pleasant 8 member band in the subsequent few years with some trumpets and three bass players for that additional…….beef. No it’s cool. Principally because each our names are Chad, and everybody knows that folks of the identical identify get along THE BEST! I feel the duo thing is simply less drama cause there’s much less personalities to cope with…. not that we don’t have those problems haha, however they’re fairly small. I could be a pain, however at the very least I’m only driving 1 individual nuts for probably the most half. It also allows us to tour slightly leaner, and make albums quicker whereas sustaining a really particular sound. The longer you make data the extra everybody gets restless and needs to “do more” regardless of initially being proud of exploring of their realm of bass or triangle or no matter. By the top the merch woman feels she’s entitled to a monitor trigger she’s been around lengthy enough haha. I’m totally joking, this duo works for us as a result of it simply does. I feel it relies upon 100% on the group dynamics and all that. I respect the amount of work 2012 places into his craft, and I hope he feels the same approach haha. I truthfully don’t actually know a down aspect.. agreeing on places to eat?

Enoch Journal : Your songs sound nice for less than 2 guys. What are we listening to when it comes to the ultimate product. Are you enjoying bass? What are the brands of devices you take pleasure in enjoying and are on the album?

The Suicide Denial – Chad Gerber : Ah thanks! When we’ve those 8 members the songs will sound epic haha. The band is broken down into Guitars, Vocals, Percussion, Synth/Synth bass. I really like bass guitar, but after being in so many bands with bass guitar I needed to see what we might do with synth bass, so every thing you hear is synth bass. My main instrument has all the time been guitar since I used to be a bit of child, but synthesizers are an in depth 2nd, and 2012’s is percussion, any and all types. We will do the instrument swapping factor, however for this band there’s an enormous importance placed on pushing our expertise on devices we’re enthusiastic about, and dedicated too. Identical to in sports ya know? If a pitcher maxes out his expertise, he shouldn’t go play 2nd, he needs to push by way of and……unmax. Yep.. pretty positive I just invented a new horrible word haha.

Enoch Magazine : When your administration approached us, the boasted you have been the “Smallest Band” on Warped Tour. Is that a play on words trigger there’s just 2 of you? He also talked about you got dropped or kicked off the tour??

The Suicide Denial – Chad Gerber : haha, awesome… thanks management. Man, Warped Tour was a visit. A sophisticated, emotional roller coaster of a trip. It was our first one so we have been pretty stoked and harassed about particulars and all that. We have been performing our full synth rock set within the Kia Soul Lounge when one of the head Vans Warped Tour individuals walked as much as the Kia rep and was like “this is their last set”. Sadly, this was our 2nd present and we had just pushed from Los Angeles to the east coast for this entire thing. That was in all probability the toughest set we’ve ever performed… not like “rocking out”, but making an attempt to only end it. So many emotions happening directly. We talked with Kia and long story brief there have been some politics, combined communication, and doubtless individuals just having a nasty day, and we have been accomplished. Totally booted and stranded in Connecticut. Worst half is we didn’t even do anything! No one even talked to us. Just sucks being in a state of affairs so uncontrolled. I imply… we didn’t even break something! I’m positive that is where the “smallest band on tour” comes into play haha. This type of stuff just doesn’t occur to the large guys. We had a pair lengthy days stranded in a lodge somewhere once we determined we have been going to point out up on the subsequent present in New Jersey, find Kevin Lyman (the owner of Warped), and see if he might assist us. He did. We found him by his bus, he listened to our entire story, talked with the totally different individuals concerned right there with us in individual, and identical to that we have been allowed to finish our dates. I don’t know if I’ve ever gained so much respect for somebody in such a short amount of time, but that guy is mad cool. Not just trigger he fastened the state of affairs, but the one dude who might have treated us like the smallest band, handled us like the most important. It was surreal.

Enoch Magazine : Last question: We ask everyone. What’s your perception of Jesus and the way did you get that perception. (for instance, my notion of Jesus was shaped early as a child rising up in a Christian house, however my understanding and perception of Jesus as we speak is a 180 from what I used to be taught then, and so on…). Excited to listen to your thoughts!

The Suicide Denial – Chad Gerber : I have heard all the standard from individuals, church buildings, pastors, road crazies, and the bulk seem to tout off select information on Jesus that paints him in a little bit of a unique mild than what I’ve read. The stuff that we all hear continuously is “he loves everyone, he’s not violent, he’s my boyfriend, he always forgives you, he’s going to kill people we don’t like, he just fixed my lawnmower”, all of it appears to have turned Jesus into a star, or a squishy Santa who provides wishes. I’m a type of those that has to know one thing from the source, so early on I learn into it and shaped my view of Jesus from what the Bible truly says. I figured if his teachings have stood on their own for hundreds of years with out helpful interpretation by third events, why can’t individuals nonetheless simply read from the supply? From what I have learn he was robust, extremely sensible, on a mission, fearless, bluntly prevented drama, referred to as idiots out, incredibly variety, stayed away from churchy individuals, respected by everybody BUT churchy individuals, didn’t confuse individuals with churchy lingo haha, and was robust enough to forgive individuals for all of the horrific issues they took off themselves and dumped on him by way of physical torture. No race, culture, or perception system actually have grounds to hate him, but perhaps grounds to hate the best way countless of people have portrayed him.
